Open joint stock company Telecominvest (hereinafter referred to as the “Company”) is a holding managing company, which unites enterprises that are present almost in all segments of the telecommunications industry and are operating all over Russia.
The Company was founded in 1994 by the leading telecommunication enterprises in St. Petersburg – OAO Petersburg Telephone Network and OAO St. Petersburg National and International Telephone – for the purpose of effective management of their subsidiaries. In 1996 the Company acquired another partner – Commerzbank – one of the largest banks in Germany, which became one of the shareholders in the Company through its subsidiary First National Holding S.A. (FNH).
In 2000 Swedish telecommunications concern Telia A.B., which has very strong positions virtually in all segments of the telecommunications industry in Scandinavia and Northern Europe, became a shareholder of FNH. Strategic partnership between the Company and Telia is developing in all directions of activities of the Telecominvest Group. We also actively exploit operational experience of our Western partner.
The main goal of the Telecominvest Group operators is to provide customers with the highly qualitative services of voice communications and the services of data transmission as well as access to various information sources. Telecominvest grants these services using the set of wireless technologies (cellular, paging and trunking networks) and modern technologies of fixed-line communications, including broadband subscribers access of different types. Over seven years of operation the efforts of the Company and the members of the Group resulted in construction of modern mobile and fixed-line digital networks in Russia, which enabled the population of the country to use different types of modern telecommunication services.
The Company also carries out activities in the area of creation of information and billing systems, information platforms of the last generation, such as digital TV systems and commercial call-centres. The process of convergence of telecommunications with information technologies and mass-media opens up a wide range of possibilities for the Group to develop the existing as well as new business directions.
The main task of the Company is to consolidate the efforts and the potential of the subsidiary and affiliated companies in order to be able to satisfy the demands of the customers in modern communications services. In order to fulfill these tasks Telecominvest attracts investments, implements telecommunications projects, creates new enterprises and provides for their effective development. The shareholding owned by the Company enable it to coordinate its subsidiaries and affiliates in an effective way.
Being a holding company Telecominvest uses a system approach to business, which is reflected in the goal-oriented development of all operational segments of the Group on the basis of unified standards and procedures. Telecominvest carries out strategic planning and coordinates the activities of enterprises through specialized departments and divisions, the main task of which is to create conditions essential for dynamic development of the Group.
Telecominvest is trying to create a telecommunications Group of the pan-Russian scale. Today the Group is present in telecommunication markets of the Moscow region, North-West region (including St. Petersburg), North-Caucasus, Volga region, Central region, Siberia, Far East, and Ural.
In the field of mobile communications the medium-term perspective of the Group is to construct a GSM network of the federal scale and further to switch to the 3G networks.
In the field of fixed-line communications the strategic goals are strengthening the Group leading position in the telecommunications market of the North-West region and creation of new services on the basis of modern technologies: Internet, broadband subscriber access, etc.
Moreover the Group plans to develop information services business based on modern technology platforms.
Education and training of the personnel in the Group is one of Telecominvest’s main goals. The strategy in this field sounds like this: Achievement of better results by revealing the potential of the enterprise and its staff. In the conditions of quickly developing market and tough competition the staff becomes that foundation stone which carries the entire development strategy of the Group. That is why the Company pays much attention to maintenance and optimisation of a complex system of effective education and training of the staff in the member-companies of the Group, as well as building of effective methods for motivation.
The Company’s investment strategy is based on the concept of reasonable use of a wide range of tools for operational and investment activities. In addition to reinvesting profits to provide the Group companies with necessary funds, the Company obtains bank loans and vendor financing. If such a case relates to recently set-up companies, Telecominvest acts as a warrantor under these types of borrowings. However, in any case an essential condition for implementation of investment projects is revenue maximization along with optimization of financing scheme. We aim at creating optimal concepts for new businesses that enable TCI’s newly set-up companies show good performance in terms of operating results as early as in first years of operation and generate sufficient funds for companies to develop with no external financing.
Among the foreign and Russian banks, which are co-operating with the Group, we should mention the well-known financial institutions such as European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, International Moscow Bank, Commerzbank, BNP-Dresdner Bank, Credit Lyonnais, St.Petersburg Industrial and Construction Bank. Over 9 years of operation, Telecominvest has gained a reputation as a reliable guarantor for investments into Russia’s telecommunications industry. At present Telecominvest is actively involved in joint telecommunication projects with the leading mobile operators and equipment suppliers, promoting cooperation with Telia, Sonera, Nokia, Siemens, NEC Corporation, Mitsui, Lucent Technologies, and other companies.
