Bulletin EU 7/8-1998
The Commission has decided to authorise the acquisition of joint control of Lietuvos Telekomas (LT) by Telia and Sonera, following an appraisal under new Article 2(4) of the recently amended merger control regulation.
The joint venture will provide fixed-line telephony services in Lithuania. The notified operation consists of an agreement by which Teila and Sonera acquire joint control of LT, which will operate on the Lithuanian market for fixed-line and mobile telephony services. Since this market is outside the European Union, the Commission is not empowered to carry out an appraisal under Community competition rules. It has decided not to oppose this operation and to declare it compatible with the common market since it neither creates nor reinforces a dominant position on the markets under its jurisdiction and does not represent anticompetitive behaviour on the part of the parent companies.
